“Checking Car Battery Health: To inspect whether your car battery is deteriorating or not, it is recommended to park your car and turn off the engine for about 1 minute or after parking for approximately 4-6 hours. The reading on the meter should ideally be between 12-12.8 volts. If it’s below 12 volts, it indicates that the car battery is starting to deteriorate, unable to hold a charge, or not fully charging. If you leave your car parked for about 2 days, there is a possibility that the car may not start (unless the car battery is relatively new, in which case it may be due to a current leakage to the ground).
Checking Alternator Charge through Voltage Meter Reading: At an idle engine speed of 1,000 RPM (idle speed), the reading should be around 5-13.8 volts. If it’s below 12.8-13.4 volts, it indicates a potential issue with the alternator not fully charging the battery. However, if it’s below 12.8 volts, it means the alternator is not supplying electrical current to the car battery.
At an engine speed of 2,000-2,500 RPM, the reading should be around 8-14.7 volts. If it exceeds 15 volts, it suggests a problem with the voltage regulation circuit of the alternator, which can cause the car battery to deteriorate faster than normal due to being charged at excessively high voltage, leading to high heat in the car battery. Excessive heat may result in boiling of the battery water.
Multimeter for Measuring Car Battery: However, regardless of the measurements, a car battery typically has a lifespan of about 2 years. If you suspect that your car battery is deteriorating or nearing the end of its lifespan, it is advisable to replace it promptly. In case any abnormalities with the car battery occur, it is better to address them promptly.”
