The province of Pattani is undoubtedly not only known for its abundant and beautiful natural attractions but also for another significant landmark, the Central Mosque of Pattani. This mosque serves as the spiritual center of Pattani, boasting architectural beauty that can be considered the most beautiful mosque in Thailand.
The Central Mosque is located in the Tambon Aehnaroor, Mueang Pattani District, Pattani Province. Its distinctive beauty stems from its exterior design, influenced by the Taj Mahal in India and Western-style temples. The mosque is often referred to as the “Thai Taj Mahal,” designed by architect Prasitthipon Mungkia. The grand green-domed mosque is surrounded by smaller domes on all four sides, and it features two minarets and a reflecting pool at the front, creating a picturesque scene.
Constructed in 1954, it took approximately nine years to complete, and the opening ceremony was officiated by General Sarit Thanarat on May 25, 1963. The mosque serves as a focal point for Muslims in the southern region and plays a crucial role in religious activities.
The idea behind constructing the Central Mosque arose from the government’s recognition of the significance of Islam, predominantly followed by the people of Pattani. The mosque serves as a central hub for Thai Muslims nationwide and is a gift to the Muslim community in the region.
Today, the Central Mosque is used for various religious activities and is open to the public daily from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, except on Fridays, a day dedicated to religious practices. The serene atmosphere within the mosque is enhanced by palm trees arranged around the area. Visitors are welcome to admire the beauty of the mosque, but it is advised to dress modestly and appropriately.
