Wat Chedi Luang is located in the heart of Chiang Mai, originally considered the central governing point of the Lanna Kingdom. It is situated at 103 Phra Pokklao Road, Tambon Phra Singh, Amphoe Mueang, Chiang Mai Province. The temple covers an area of approximately 32 rai 1 ngan 27 square wah.
“This temple is located in the center of Chiang Mai. It houses the largest pagoda in the province. The entrance gate to the sanctuary has a magnificent Naga staircase. The temple also features Inthakin pillars or city pillars.”
The Chedi Luang Pagoda is considered the tallest stupa in the northern region or Lanna, standing at approximately 80 meters high. The base is a square-shaped terrace, about 60 meters wide on each side. It was built in the early 20th century during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, the 7th monarch of the Mangrai dynasty (1913-1954). Later, Phya Tillokarat, the Royal Patriarch, commissioned the expansion of the pagoda to make it taller and wider. It was completed in 2024. The sacred Emerald Buddha was enshrined here between 2011 and 2091, marking 80 years. In 2088, during the time of Princess Siripha, an earthquake caused the top of the pagoda to collapse. Currently, the height is 40.8 meters, and the base is 60 meters wide on each side.
Situated in the center is the Viharn (assembly hall), built in 2471 by Chao Khun Uba Lee, Khun Phra Maha Jaro, and Chao Kaeo Nawarat. Inside the assembly hall is the principal Buddha image, Phra Pratana Buddhasiripong, made in the early Chiang Mai style influenced by Pala art (India) and cast in gold alloy. It stands at 18 cubits tall. The front entrance of the sanctuary has a Naga staircase leading to a beautiful gate pavilion. These twin nagas are considered the most beautiful in the northern region.
“The main Buddha image in the Viharn, Phra Pratana Buddhasiripong, follows the early Chiang Mai art style.”
The Phra Pratana stupa was established when King Mengrai founded Chiang Mai in 1839. It is located in the small Thai-style Wat Chet Yot Thammaram Temple. The Inthakin pillar is made of large teak wood buried underground. Every year on the 12th night of the 8th lunar month (usually in May), the “Entering the Inthakin” ceremony is held to celebrate the city’s foundation.
